I decide
autumn is a time of reflection,
I decide
as I stare down into the muddy puddle
and study the face reflected in it.
I thought that this September
would still be hot,
but I guess the earth gave us
all she had during
that stifling summer.
now rain hits my windowpanes
and my hair is soaked
whenever I arrive at school.
the summer sun is still there,
but I can feel it slowly being
enveloped by a
cloud of cold.
autumn is a time of reflection,
I decide
because I tend to think more
about my life
about my goals
than I do in the new year.
I like renewing myself
together with the trees.
as they’ll soon start losing their coats,
I’ll shrug on mine
and dress my soul
in red, yellow, gold.
for years ‘who I am’ has been a figure with a blurry face
sitting behind me.
for years ‘who I want to be’ has been a
mere shape, a cloud, a gathering
of vague ideas.
autumn is a time of reflection,
and this autumn I am not only looking back
but also forward and all around.
shapes start to form lines start to form words.
the muddy puddle clears and now I can see the crisp blue sky.
the smell of cinnamon and candles
the feel of wool and books.
-
autumn is a time of reflection,
I decide.
maybe it’s not the most original idea
but it’s only one of the many new ones in my mind right now.
because it is autumn
and I know who I was
I know who I am
and I know who I want to be.
