and my love/hate relationship with it
it’s february the fifteenth. the day after valentine’s. the world is recovering, brushing petals off her hair and finishing the last of the chocolates. the morning was cold and crisp, with sun. perfect.
the world was quiet. she had nothing left to say. all she had to do was sleep, soak in the love. she doesn’t receive a lot of love herself, so feeds off the love that her children give to each other.
she blessed said children with sun. until she decided to bless them with something else. snow.
and just like that, the world shrugged off her pink hue and turned white.
all the little kids, tired from the adult celebrations, ran outside. a snowball fight here, a snowman/woman/person/cat/dog there.
all the old people, whose partner didn’t make it to another february the fourteenth smiled through the tears at the snowy landscape.
and here i was, praying for it to stop. or at least for it not to stay.
i am past the point of romanticising snow. summer is for romanticising snow, winter is for dreading it.
it is simply too wet, too unpleasant.
i’m so terribly sorry that i don’t want to be drenched by an ice-cold snowball slipped down the back of my coat making the hairs on my neck rise.
i’m so terribly sorry that i don’t want to slip on my way to school, land on the road with my bike on top of me and my rucksack spilling its contents onto the wet floor.
i’m so terribly sorry that i don’t want to make a snowman, and get my woolly gloves soaked in doing so.
i’m so terribly sorry that i would rather stay inside and watch from the comfort of my sofa. warm and dry.
i guess i could be called the grinch of snow. mr scrooge of the winter weather.
ugh, i need to stop.
the problem is that the snow and i are the same. we’re both stubborn. it wants to make my life miserable and i just want it gone.
maybe we could make it work, the snow and i. maybe we could learn to coexist peacefully. i guess we’re going to have to.
i love snow. i hate snow.
summer is for loving snow. winter is for hating snow.
